About the Camp

ART AND MOVEMENT : LIVING FROM THE INSIDE OUT

There will be laughter, silliness, girl talk and fun.

Using mixed media - mask-making, clay sculpture, painting, collage-making, and paper Mache, girls will explore how they see themselves in the world. Through mindfulness and light yoga, fun discussions, playful activities, art projects, and interactions with guest speakers, they'll learn to express their voice, make connections and practice relationship skills that'll sustain them through the coming years.

Nine to twelve-year-old girls are on the edge of change and begin to redefine their identities and self-perceptions. As they enter adolescence, girls can go from being full of energy, strong and compassionate to experiencing a sudden loss of voice and confidence.

Our one-week camp provides girls a safe place to investigate their identities. They help girls gain awareness and appreciation for the skin they live in and the lives they lead. They'll cultivate individual strengths and learn how to embody what they value most about themselves. Through learning techniques that integrate body, mind, and creativity, girls will learn to live from the inside out rather than being defined from the outside.

HOW IT WORKS—TYPICAL DAY: This is a sample day of activities and is subject to change:

Morning Mindfulness: Girls begin each day with exploring body awareness through simple yoga stretches, deep breathing, mindfulness, and experiential activities with yoga expert, Rutu Chaudhari, director of All Life Is Yoga studio and founder of The Dharma Project. In Rutu's sessions, girls develop body awareness and appreciation while learning valuable relationship skills.

Identity Exploration: Youth identity expert, Danielle Stewart, will lead lively conversations, group activities and games designed to empower girls to resist gender stereotypes, and instead, learn to embody what they truly value. They will learn critical skills to examine the impact of media images on girls, lead an inquiry into the meaning of friendship, and learn relationship-building skills.

Art and Self-Representation: Using mixed media of their choice - mask-making, clay sculpture, drawing, painting, and paper Mache, among other mediums, girls will explore their identity and depict how they see themselves in the world. They'll develop artistic skill and technique as they translate their ideas into art pieces with artist and beloved veteran Paideia School art teacher, Ginger Birdsey.

Girls will also have opportunities to interact with interdisciplinary guest speakers: women artists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, writers, CEO's.

On the last day of camp, June 14, 3:00PM - 3:30PM, there will be an art exhibit for parents and community for girls to showcase their creations.

OUR INSTRUCTORS: Danielle Stewart and Ginger Birdsey are well versed in methods and instructional techniques that gives voice to the lived experience of girls.
